Wuhan has upgraded the lighting system on the iconic Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, replacing 150 legacy 250-watt high-pressure sodium lamps with 200-watt smart LED fixtures.
The previous sodium lighting suffered from severe glare, poor color rendering in humid river conditions, and high energy consumption due to fixed operating schedules.
Supported by a smart control system that adjusts brightness based on ambient light levels and specific time periods, the upgrade has reduced the bridge’s daily electricity usage from 450 kWh to 144 kWh, an overall energy savings of 68 percent.
The initiative is part of Wuhan’s broader urban green lighting initiative aimed at equipping all major river-crossing bridges with smart lighting systems by the end of 2027.
