The indigenous Surubu people, also known as the Kuvori or Vori people of Kaduna State, are set to converge at the UBE Primary School, Kuwovi in Kauru Local Government Area on Sunday, December 27, to celebrate the Kurya Day 2026.
Organised by the Kurya Surubu Youth Development Association (KYDA), under the theme “One Culture. One People. One Heritage. One United Community,” the event will bring together cultural enthusiasts, local youth groups, cultural performers, community leaders and sons and daughters of the Surubu community from across Nigeria and worldwide for a celebration of Surubu culture, unity and heritage.
Organisers say the festival is a massive communal homecoming designed to promote unity and showcase the beauty of their culture to the world.
Held every December, Kurya Day is not just a festival. It is an annual post-harvest cultural celebration and homecoming which aims to preserve and showcase the unique ancestral traditions of the Surubu people with vibrant music and dance, while fostering unity and peace among the youth and surrounding communities.
For the Surubu people, it is a day of remembrance, reunion and reaffirmation — a day when elders, youths, women, farmers, traders and those in the diaspora return to their ancestral homes to celebrate who they are and where they come from.
Kurya Day is also aimed at community development, peace-building, and ethnic solidarity. The festival bridges generations, ensuring that younger community members connect deeply with their roots.
According to the organisers, the programme will feature traditional dance, local music performances, competitive games and a signature community football match.
Cultural presentations will highlight majestic cultural displays of the eleven wards in Kauru Local Government Area of the state.
General Secretary of the KYDA, Mr. Kish Stephen, said Kurya Day serves as the perfect homecoming that aims to elicit serious discussions on cultural heritage preservation, security, development and regional youth empowerment across the Kauru Local Government Area.
