China’s eastern Jiangsu province is turning liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy into a new driver of economic growth, supporting aquaculture, food processing, logistics, and computing industries.
In Binhai county, cold energy generated during LNG regasification is being used to maintain suitable temperatures for farming Atlantic salmon and other cold-water fish. The project is expected to produce 3,000 tons of fish annually and generate about 200 million yuan in output.
The county has also developed a cold energy industrial hub that supplies low-temperature energy for freeze-dried food production, cold-chain logistics, and storage facilities. A local freeze-drying company reports that the technology cuts production costs by one-third while improving efficiency.
In addition, a marine intelligent computing center under construction will use LNG cold energy to cool 3,000 server racks, supporting offshore wind power operations and marine research.
Officials estimate that Binhai’s cold energy industry will generate 10 billion yuan in economic output during China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030).
