Changxing Island in Shanghai’s Chongming District is rapidly developing into a world-class shipbuilding center, driven by innovation and advanced manufacturing. Major shipyards such as Jiangnan Shipyard and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding are now fully booked through 2030, reflecting strong global demand.

Shipbuilding efficiency has improved significantly through modular construction techniques, reducing LNG carrier build time from over 30 months to about 16–18 months. Large-scale components are now assembled in parallel using advanced lifting systems, speeding up production.

Automation is also transforming the industry. Robotics developed with Shanghai Jiao Tong University is replacing manual labor in high-risk tasks such as welding and insulation work, improving both safety and productivity.

The island has become a major hub for marine research, hosting more than 20 institutions focused on solving key engineering challenges. Collaboration between industry and academia has boosted domestic production of critical ship components to around 80%, up from less than 30% a decade ago.

Since 2020, the shipbuilding and marine equipment sector on Changxing Island has expanded rapidly, reaching over 90 billion yuan in output in 2025. Authorities plan to grow this figure beyond 120 billion yuan by 2027, strengthening Shanghai’s position as a global shipbuilding leader.
