China is intensifying efforts to protect farmland and improve soil quality as part of its long-term food security strategy. Since 2012, the country has strengthened farmland conservation through stricter regulations, pollution control, ecological restoration, and soil improvement.

Authorities say more than 80,000 potential sources of soil pollution have been eliminated, and contaminated farmland has been restored. A 2024 national action plan introduced comprehensive measures to prevent soil pollution and reduce heavy metal contamination.

China is also expanding ecological farming and rehabilitating degraded land. In Shandong province, thousands of hectares of saline-alkali land have been transformed into productive farmland, while conservation farming in Jilin province has improved soil fertility and reduced erosion.

Ecological farming models in Hubei province have cut fertilizer and pesticide use by over 70 percent while boosting grain output and farmers’ incomes.

As part of its 2026–2030 development plan, China will continue strengthening farmland protection through integrated land management, ecological restoration, and sustainable agricultural practices to safeguard food production and promote high-quality development.
