Turpan in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is turning its extreme heat and dry climate into an advantage for industrial testing.
The city records temperatures above 35°C for more than 100 days annually, with ground temperatures often exceeding 70°C in summer. These conditions have helped establish a dry-heat testing industry worth more than 100 million yuan ($14.77 million) annually.
From June to September, more than 10,000 products, including vehicles, metals, plastics and rubber materials, undergo high-temperature testing in Turpan. The city is also a major testing hub for new energy vehicles (NEVs), with five testing bases conducting more than 90 percent of China’s automotive high-temperature tests.
Testing has expanded to low-altitude aircraft, air conditioners and photovoltaic equipment. More than 20 low-altitude aircraft have completed tests in Turpan, while a major natural-environment testing center has assessed over 42,000 products across various industries.
By transforming its harsh climate into a natural testing environment, Turpan is developing extreme-weather testing into a growing industrial sector.
