AI Engines: How China is Supercharging Its Transport Network

China is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence across roads, railways, aviation, ports, and postal services to drive high-quality sector development. Guided by a multi-department action plan targeting 2030, the initiative establishes 41 typical application scenarios across 10 major areas to enhance safety, convenience, and industrial efficiency.

Expressways like the Beijing-Xiong’an route now utilize large-scale AI models for real-time traffic updates, automated toll ticketing, and emergency recognition with over 95 percent accuracy. For public travel and freight, AI powers intelligent passenger-flow management, route optimization, and fog early-warning systems, ensuring safer and more efficient transit.

The technology is also modernizing logistics and rail safety. China’s postal sector currently operates over 16,000 autonomous delivery vehicles and 400 drones to boost last-mile efficiency. Meanwhile, high-speed rail networks use 56,000 AI-connected cameras that combine video and radar data to automatically detect track intrusions, having processed nearly 310,000 valid alerts as of April 2026.

By using real-world transport needs to test and scale AI technologies, China aims to construct an intelligent, multi-dimensional transport network that accelerates digital-intelligent upgrading and green transition.
