China has criticized Japan’s latest draft Defence White Paper for portraying China’s development and activities in the Pacific as security threats. According to an article by Zhong Sheng in People’s Daily, Japan is using regional security concerns to justify military expansion and significant changes to its defence policy.

The report argues that China remains committed to peaceful development and maintains a defensive national defence policy. It also accuses Japan of increasing military spending, acquiring offensive capabilities, easing restrictions on arms exports, and strengthening military cooperation under the pretext of regional security.

Chinese analysts and regional observers have expressed concerns that Japan’s growing military role could heighten tensions and contribute to an arms race in the Asia-Pacific region. The article urges Japan to learn from its wartime history, handle historical issues responsibly, and build trust with neighbouring countries through concrete actions that support regional peace and stability.
