China’s growing cross-border e-commerce sector is creating new opportunities for South-South cooperation by strengthening trade connectivity, digital commerce, and industrial development among developing countries.

At a forum held in Geneva, representatives from UN agencies, diplomats, and businesses discussed how China’s experience in digital trade can support Global South economies. Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Alibaba’s Tmall Global and JD.com continue to expand access for international brands to China’s vast consumer market while helping Chinese products reach global markets.

Officials highlighted strong policy support, advanced digital technologies, and resilient supply chains as key drivers of the sector’s growth. China currently has over 160,000 cross-border e-commerce enterprises, with logistics networks covering more than 200 countries and regions.

China has also strengthened digital cooperation through training programs, infrastructure projects, and technology support for developing nations. Over the next five years, the country plans to launch 200 digital economy and AI training programs to help Global South countries benefit from technological innovation and digital trade opportunities.
