China’s online literature industry is experiencing rapid growth, with millions of writers and hundreds of millions of readers contributing to a vibrant digital literary landscape.

By the end of 2025, China had more than 33 million online literary works, 35 million registered writers, and 525 million readers. The industry generated about 49 billion yuan (about $7.26 billion) in revenue.

Writers now come from diverse backgrounds, including bus technicians, police officers, farmers, teachers and delivery workers. Their experiences are inspiring stories that increasingly focus on everyday life, social development, technology, rural revitalization, and traditional culture.

Realistic-themed online fiction has expanded significantly, with nearly 2 million works recorded by 2025. Readers also play an active role by commenting on chapters, suggesting ideas, and influencing story development.

With digital platforms making literary creation accessible to ordinary people, online literature is evolving from a writer-to-reader model into an interactive form of cultural creation, highlighting the growing creative vitality of Chinese society.
