China has launched the Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE), a joint space mission with Europe, marking a major milestone in the country’s space science development. The satellite has successfully entered its designated orbit and will use the world’s first soft X-ray imaging technology to capture panoramic images of Earth’s magnetosphere.
As the final mission under the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Strategic Pioneer Program (Phase II), SMILE signals China’s transition from standalone scientific satellites to coordinated satellite constellations for advanced space exploration.
Over the past decade, China has expanded its space science capabilities through missions such as the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), the quantum satellite Micius, the Insight-HXMT X-ray telescope, and the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S), achieving breakthroughs in dark matter research, quantum communication, and solar observation.
SMILE will work alongside ASO-S and the Chinese Meridian Project to provide comprehensive monitoring of the Sun-Earth space environment, supporting satellite operations, communications, and navigation.
China has also strengthened its technological independence by developing key satellite systems and data-processing capabilities domestically while expanding international cooperation through projects such as SMILE.
The country’s long-term space science roadmap aims to further enhance deep-space exploration and reinforce its position as a leading global space power.
