Gov Makinde’s PDP Faction Aligns with APM for 2027 Polls

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Governor Seyi Makinde, has entered a political alliance with the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The two opposition parties on Thursday, May 14, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, formalizing their alliance for the upcoming polls. Seyi Bamidele signed the MOU on behalf of the PDP, while Oladele Oyadeji signed for the APM.

Governor Seyi Mankinde and Mr. Yusuf Dantalle, the National Chairman of the APM, also signed the agreement on behalf of the opposition parties.

Meanwhile, at the same event, the Oyo State Governor officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the APM.

The governor made this declaration at the joint mega-rally of the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples’ Movement held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

”This is the time to reset the country. Therefore, today, I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, announce my candidacy for the position of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.

The governor noted that the country’s situation has ”continued to deteriorate,” putting the majority of Nigerians in survival mode daily.

Governor Makinde added that government functionaries responsible for citizens’ welfare have abnegated their responsibilities.

”This is why, for the past months, one question has been at the top of my mind: where do we go from here? Is this how we should continue as a nation?”

Makinde also stated that the alliance between the PDP and APM would aid and enhance the former ruling party to field candidates for all positions in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

”As such, today in Ibadan, the first alliance is formed. The alliance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM).

”This handshake will allow us to field candidates at all levels. We will field candidates from top to bottom. We will field candidates from the presidency to state assemblies, and everything in between,” the governor declared.

Suffice it to state that under the signed MOU, candidates of the PDP faction contesting for Governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly seats will, as such, run on the platform of the APM rather than the PDP, come 2027 elections.

While this declaration marks a shift from the PDP, the party under which he currently serves as governor, we await the formal response of the PDP’s national leadership to this development, with the move undoubtedly adding to the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscapes as political parties position themselves for the next election cycle.
