Japan’s Proposed Security Policy Revisions Raise Concerns Over Military Expansion

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has approved draft revisions to the country’s three key security documents, proposing higher defense spending, expanded military capabilities, and the removal of restrictions on arms exports.

The proposed changes include strengthening long-range missile capabilities, enhancing counterstrike capacity, expanding operations in space and cyberspace, and accelerating military modernization. The draft also calls for institutional reforms to transform Japan’s defense capabilities over the next five years.

The article argues that the revisions represent a significant shift from Japan’s postwar exclusively defense-oriented policy and reflect an accelerated drive toward military expansion. It also cites increases in defense spending, military deployments, and investments in advanced technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence.

It contends that the proposed policies could heighten regional security concerns and urges Japan to uphold its pacifist principles and contribute to regional peace and stability.
