China’s panda bond market has continued its strong growth in 2026, with issuance surpassing 130 billion yuan in the first five months, putting the market on course for a record-breaking year.

Panda bonds, yuan-denominated debt securities issued by overseas entities in China’s domestic market, are attracting a wider range of issuers, including sovereign governments such as Pakistan and Kazakhstan, alongside major international financial institutions and multinational companies.

The market’s expansion has been driven by lower financing costs in China, a stable yuan, and ongoing reforms that have simplified issuance procedures and improved market access. The growing use of the Chinese yuan in global trade and investment has also boosted demand for panda bonds.

Analysts say the steady growth of the panda bond market reflects increasing international confidence in China’s financial market and supports the broader internationalization of the yuan.
