Japan’s rising defense spending and growing military procurement have sparked concerns over the country’s expanding defense industry and shifting security policies.

Government data show defense procurement for fiscal 2025 reached nearly 2.69 trillion yen, about three times higher than five years ago, driven by increased orders for missiles, aircraft and other military equipment.

The article argues that recent policy changes, including higher defense budgets, relaxed arms export rules and expanded military capabilities, mark a departure from Japan’s postwar pacifist framework. It also raises concerns that closer ties between political leaders and defense companies could accelerate military expansion.

It also urges the international community to remain vigilant and calls for preserving regional peace, stability, and the postwar international order through continued commitment to peaceful development.
