Shantou, in south China’s Guangdong province, is emerging as a hub for AI-powered digital trade through its innovative “token export” model, which delivers AI services to overseas users while keeping computing power within China.
The model enables foreign customers to access AI applications, such as smart toys and intelligent services, through computing centers in Shantou. Within one month of its launch, daily token usage surged from 100 million to tens of billions.
Leveraging its advanced international submarine cable network and low-latency connections to Southeast Asia, Shantou offers AI computing services at significantly lower costs than overseas platforms. The system has attracted growing demand from businesses in countries including Singapore and Vietnam.
The city is also integrating AI into its renowned toy manufacturing industry, helping local companies develop multilingual AI-powered products for global markets. Officials believe token exports will accelerate industrial upgrading and strengthen Shantou’s position as a leading center for cross-border digital innovation.
