Shenzhen is strengthening urban resilience by expanding underground utility tunnels that house electricity, water, gas, sewage, and telecommunications infrastructure beneath the city’s roads.
The Apollo Future Industry City features a 5.6-kilometer smart utility tunnel with separate compartments for different services, allowing repairs and new installations without digging up streets. Intelligent robots and real-time monitoring systems improve maintenance efficiency and emergency response.
Designed with sponge city technology, the tunnel also enhances flood control by capturing and reusing rainwater. Since opening in 2021, the area has reported no flooding, supporting safer and more sustainable urban development.
