In northeast China’s Panjin at the Liaohekou National Nature Reserve, rising sightings of the Spotted seal are signalling strong ecological recovery.

Officials and researchers report a record peak of 451 seals observed this year, the highest in three consecutive years, as habitat conditions continue to improve. Once severely degraded by intensive aquaculture and pollution, the Liaohe estuary has undergone large-scale restoration since 2015, including wetland restoration, the closure of sewage outlets, and coastal rehabilitation.

Local fishermen have joined conservation efforts as volunteers, helping monitor and protect marine life. Ecological improvements have also led to the return of fish stocks, richer biodiversity, and the growth of eco-tourism and wetland-based industries.

Authorities say the recovery reflects a shift toward sustainable development, balancing conservation with economic activity as the estuary’s ecosystems continue to rebound.
