The 2025 Chinese Ambassador’s Cup in Abuja showcases young talent and deepens cultural sports diplomacy between the two nations.
The 2025 Chinese Ambassador’s Cup Wushu Championship wrapped up in Abuja on Friday, showcasing the increasing popularity of Wushu in Nigeria and the strengthening cultural bonds between China and Nigeria. The three-day event, now in its seventh year, was co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and the Nigerian Wushu Kung Fu Federation, attracting over 150 athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai described Wushu as a “bridge that connects people” and a vital means for cultural exchange. “Wushu is a precious treasure of Chinese culture. It not only builds our bodies but also shapes our character and spirit. It embodies core Chinese values: self-discipline, self-improvement, and a commitment to respecting and helping others. These resonate deeply with Nigerian culture, which also values hard work and social harmony,” he said.
The ambassador noted that the sport has “taken root and flourished” in Nigeria, attracting enthusiasts from both urban and rural areas. He linked its growth to China’s Global Civilisation Initiative and wider China–Africa cooperation efforts. “In 2023, President Xi Jinping put forward the ‘Global Civilisation Initiative,’ emphasising that civilisations become enriched through exchange and thrive through mutual learning. At the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation, President Xi and President Tinubu held a successful meeting where they agreed to strengthen cultural and sports exchanges, designating 2026 as the ‘China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges,’” he said.
Yu also announced that Wushu will feature at the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games. “This is a significant moment for every Wushu enthusiast here today. It opens up new opportunities for the sport’s growth across Africa,” he added, urging Nigerian athletes to see Wushu not just as a sport but as a way to connect with Chinese culture. “The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria will continue to support the development of Wushu in Nigeria. We will work with the National Sports Commission and the local Wushu community to create more platforms for exchange and learning.”
In an interview with VIP News, the ambassador reiterated that, “Through sports, we share the same spirit, we share the same culture, and we would like to see more cooperation between the two countries. Beyond the martial arts, there are a lot of areas we could cooperate with Nigeria in other sports, like football, because many Chinese love the Super Eagles, and we would love to see more cooperation between the two countries.”
The National Sports Commission (NSC) welcomed the support for Wushu’s growth. The commission Chairman, Shehu Dikko, said, “We are quite excited. We are happy with this support. It is a new sport that is already gaining ground in Nigeria, and I believe that it will create another pathway for our youth to live their dreams. Now that it’s reaching the Olympic level, we will take it even more seriously.”
The championship included competitions in Taolu (routines), Tai Chi (balance and fluid motion), and Sanda (combat sparring). Standout performances included 11-year-old Naima Sanusi, who won gold in the Tai Chi division and received a trophy and a cash prize. “I feel very happy,” she told VIP News. “I want to compete in other countries. I believe that I can become a world champion.” Other gold medalists were Justice Unanka (Taolu Single), Goodluck Emmanuel (75kg Male Sanda), and Winnifred Agara (60kg Female Sanda).
Held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, the event drew sports officials, diplomats, students, and martial arts enthusiasts, showcasing skill, discipline, and cultural pride. With Wushu now part of Nigeria’s National Sports Festival, both Chinese and Nigerian authorities reaffirmed their commitment to using sports as a platform for cultural exchange and people-to-people diplomacy.
