China and Greece jointly hosted the Second World Conference of Classics in Athens in June
9, 2026, under the theme “Dialogue between Ancient and Modern: Contemporary Inspirations from Classical Wisdom.”

The conference explored how classical studies can help address modern challenges such as value confusion, utilitarianism, and social alienation in the digital age. Scholars believe ancient wisdom remains a valuable resource for promoting humanistic values, moral development, and mutual learning among civilizations.

The article also pays tribute to German classicist Fritz-Heiner Mutschler, who made significant contributions to advancing classical studies in China and fostering academic exchanges between Chinese and Western scholars.

China has made notable progress in the field, establishing specialized research institutions, publishing hundreds of classical studies volumes, and strengthening international cooperation through initiatives such as the World Conference of Classics and the Chinese School of Classical Studies in Athens.

Experts say the conference will provide a platform for scholars worldwide to reinterpret classical wisdom and offer insights into contemporary global challenges through dialogue and cultural exchange.
