A pregnant woman in labour was among at least 22 people killed when gunmen attacked a primary health centre and nearby homes in Kawel community, Mushere District of Plateau State, on Sunday, June 21, residents and local authorities said.

The woman, identified as Larai Danjuma, was reportedly in labour at the facility when the attackers stormed the community on Sunday night and opened fire on patients, health workers and residents, killing dozens and injuring others.

Speaking during a condolence visit by Plateau State Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo on Tuesday, Larai’s brother, Daniel Nanle, recounted the ordeal.

“My immediate sister was married to Mr. Danjuma Damial. She was taken to the hospital because she was due for delivery. Unfortunately, the attackers came and killed her,” Nanle said.

Reports indicated that the attack killed 22 people, including health workers, patients, security personnel and residents. Several families were displaced and property destroyed.

Nanle urged authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and strengthen security in vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks.

The latest violence has renewed concerns over recurring attacks in parts of Plateau State, despite ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace in affected communities.

During the visit, Piyo commiserated with bereaved families and assured residents of the government’s commitment to improving security and protecting lives and property.
