China is accelerating urban renewal projects to improve living conditions, preserve cultural heritage, promote green development, and strengthen urban resilience during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030).

Across the country, aging residential communities are being upgraded with improved housing, parking facilities, public services, and community spaces. Historic neighbourhoods are also being revitalized while preserving their cultural character and adding modern amenities.

The plan includes renovating 115,000 old residential communities, upgrading 300 historic and cultural districts, expanding urban parks and greenways, and creating thousands of pocket parks to support low-carbon development.

China is also modernizing underground infrastructure by upgrading 770,000 kilometers of pipelines to improve water, gas, sewage, and drainage systems, reducing flood risks and enhancing urban safety. The nationwide initiative aims to build more livable, sustainable, and people-centered cities.
