Shanghai has transformed the aging Shimin Xincun residential community through a major urban renewal project, improving living conditions while preserving the neighborhood’s close-knit community.

The renovation replaced outdated shared kitchens and bathrooms with modern apartments featuring private facilities, elevators, and upgraded public spaces. The project also added underground parking and improved community services to support elderly residents better.

Completed this year, the redevelopment was guided by extensive resident consultation, with authorities creating customized housing plans to meet individual household needs while keeping longtime neighbours together.

Officials say the project reflects Shanghai’s people-centered approach to urban renewal, combining improved housing, modern infrastructure, and community-focused planning to enhance residents’ quality of life.
