Ile-Ife is preparing for the 2026 Olojo Festival, with the ceremonial appearance of the Aare Crown set to form the centrepiece of one of the city’s most prominent traditional celebrations.

The official website of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, lists this year’s festival for Sept. 26 to Oct. 5 in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

At the heart of Olojo is the Aare Crown, worn by the Ooni during the festival’s principal ceremonies. The monarch traditionally appears in the crown after a period of seclusion, marking one of the celebration’s most distinctive royal rites.

Olojo, commonly interpreted as the “Day of the First Dawn”, is rooted in Yoruba religious and cultural traditions associated with Ile-Ife, which occupies a central place in Yoruba accounts of creation.

The festival is also linked in Yoruba tradition to Ogun, the deity associated with iron, metalworking and craftsmanship. Its observances combine royal ceremony, religious tradition and community participation.

Alongside the principal rites, the 2026 programme includes a colloquium, traditional games, cultural processions, fashion activities and other public events. Major traditional observances are scheduled around Sept. 26.

Olojo remains one of the major traditional festivals associated with Ile-Ife, bringing together the city’s royal institution, religious traditions and wider community in an annual celebration with deep roots in Yoruba culture.
