From newly rehabilitated highways in Ibadan to an expanding rail network and an airport being upgraded to international status, infrastructure is reshaping the movement of people, goods, and capital across Oyo State. Beyond improving transportation, these investments are strengthening connectivity, supporting trade and industrial development, and reinforcing the state’s ambition to become one of Nigeria’s leading commercial and investment destinations.
Transport Infrastructure Strengthening Connectivity
Improving connectivity has become a central pillar of Oyo State’s economic development strategy. While road transport remains the dominant mode of moving people and goods, continued investment in aviation and rail is gradually creating a more integrated transport network that supports trade, strengthens supply chains, and expands access to domestic and regional markets.
The resumption of operations at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, together with ongoing efforts to upgrade the facility to international status, is expected to enhance business travel and create new opportunities for air cargo services. For manufacturers, exporters and investors, improved air connectivity could shorten delivery times for high-value goods, facilitate access to wider markets and further strengthen Oyo State’s appeal as an investment destination.
Rail transport is also emerging as an increasingly important component of the state’s logistics network. The Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway, part of the Lagos-Kano rail corridor, provides businesses with an alternative to road transport for moving goods across the country. Although highways continue to carry the majority of freight, greater use of rail has the potential to reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency and ease congestion on major transport routes.
Together with ongoing improvements to the road network, these investments are creating a more efficient and integrated transport system that is gradually strengthening Oyo State’s position as a commercial gateway connecting Southwest Nigeria with other parts of the country. As connectivity improves, businesses are benefiting from more reliable logistics, broader market access and a more competitive operating environment.
Urban Infrastructure Supporting Business Activity
The impact of infrastructure is equally evident within urban centres, where road rehabilitation, drainage improvements and street-lighting projects are helping to improve the business environment.
According to the state’s development roadmap, the Light Up Oyo Project has delivered more than 200 kilometres of street-lighting infrastructure across different parts of the state. Better lighting has improved visibility and security in many commercial areas, allowing businesses to operate for longer hours. Drainage improvements and the rehabilitation of inner-city roads have also made movement easier for traders, customers and suppliers, particularly during the rainy season when flooding and traffic congestion often disrupt commercial activities.
These improvements are beginning to make a noticeable difference for traders.
Alhaja Tawa, a clothing trader at Ogunpa International Market and a member of the Ogunpa Market Women Association, said improved road access around parts of Ibadan has made it easier for customers to visit the market and for suppliers to deliver goods.
She explained that poor road conditions previously discouraged some customers and delayed deliveries, affecting sales and increasing transport costs. While she believes there is still room for improvement, she noted that ongoing road rehabilitation has made movement less stressful and contributed to better business activities in recent months.
Her experience reflects how investments in urban infrastructure can influence economic activity beyond large-scale construction projects. Easier access to markets benefits traders, transporters and consumers alike, while improved mobility helps businesses operate more efficiently and reduces the time spent navigating congested routes.
Beyond retail trade, improved urban infrastructure also supports industrial development. Better access roads and transport links make it easier for manufacturers to receive raw materials, distribute finished products and connect with suppliers. This complements broader efforts to attract investment into sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing and logistics, where efficient transportation remains a key determinant of competitiveness.
Challenges Remain
Despite the progress made, infrastructure development remains an ongoing process rather than a completed task. Several rural roads still require rehabilitation, while maintaining existing infrastructure will be just as important as constructing new projects.
Transport operators also point to recurring challenges during the rainy season, when deteriorating road surfaces, flooding and traffic congestion continue to affect the movement of goods. Addressing these issues will require sustained investment, regular maintenance and effective collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure that infrastructure continues to support economic growth over the long term.
The Road Ahead
Infrastructure is often measured by the number of roads constructed or projects completed, but its real value lies in the opportunities it creates. For businesses, farmers and transport operators, efficient infrastructure means lower operating costs, faster movement of goods and better access to markets. For investors, it signals an environment where commerce can grow more efficiently.
Available evidence suggests that recent investments in roads, transport links and urban infrastructure are improving connectivity across Oyo State and supporting trade and logistics. However, the long-term impact of these investments will depend on consistent maintenance, the timely completion of ongoing projects and continued efforts to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with the state’s growing economic needs.
As Oyo State continues to expand its transport and urban infrastructure, the challenge will not simply be building more projects but ensuring that they deliver lasting benefits for businesses, industries and communities across the state.
