China’s Zero-Tariff Policy Expands Trade Opportunities for African Exports

China’s zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries is boosting agricultural trade and strengthening economic cooperation across the continent. Since the policy took effect, products such as cloves from Tanzania’s Zanzibar have gained greater access to the Chinese market, reducing import costs by up to 20 percent and encouraging direct trade between buyers and producers.

The policy has also created more stable market opportunities for African exporters while improving supply chain efficiency. Tanzania has become China’s largest source of imported cloves, with its market share continuing to grow.

Beyond cloves, a wider range of African products, including Ethiopian coffee, Kenyan avocados and nuts, South African citrus, Rwandan chili peppers, and Madagascan vanilla, are reaching more Chinese consumers. The expanded market access is supporting African farmers, promoting trade growth, and further strengthening China-Africa economic and people-to-people ties.
