The Edo State Judiciary has established a Special Criminal Court to fast-track the trial of kidnapping and cultism cases, with proceedings scheduled to commence on July 1 in Benin City.

According to an official statement by the Chief Registrar of the Edo State High Court, B.O. Osawaru, on June 25, 2026, the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, approved the creation of the court, to be known as Special Criminal Court 1. The court will have jurisdiction over kidnapping, cultism and other criminal matters assigned by the Chief Judge.

The development follows a formal request by Governor Monday Okpebholo in a letter dated June 19 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor. The governor cited the need to ensure speedy prosecution of offenders and strengthen the state’s criminal justice system.

The request is sequel to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s June 18 pledge to establish a dedicated court, following the parade of suspected kidnappers and other criminal suspects by the Edo State Police Command.

The state government said the specialised court is expected to accelerate the prosecution of kidnapping and cult-related offences, enhance deterrence against violent crime and reinforce public confidence in the justice system as Edo intensifies efforts to tackle insecurity.
