The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway, Xizang’s first electrified railway, has marked five years of operation, strengthening transport, trade, and tourism across the region.

Since opening in June 2021, the 400-kilometer railway has carried more than 6.25 million passengers and over 2 million tons of cargo. Travel time between Lhasa and Nyingchi has been reduced from up to eight hours by road to just over three hours, improving mobility for more than 1.3 million residents.

The railway has also supported local industries by lowering transport costs and expanding access to markets. Agricultural products, including yak meat, Tibetan pigs, and other local specialties, are now shipped more efficiently across China, while essential goods continue to flow into the region.

Tourism has also benefited from improved accessibility. Attractions such as Gala Village and Yani National Wetland Park have welcomed growing numbers of visitors, boosted local income, and created new opportunities for rural development. Railway services equipped with oxygen-supply facilities have also made travel more comfortable for visitors to the high-altitude region.

Officials say the railway continues to play a key role in promoting economic growth, rural revitalization, and regional connectivity in Xizang.
