Twenty years after entering full operation, the Qinghai-Xizang Railway continues to play a vital role in boosting economic development, tourism, and regional connectivity across China’s plateau regions. Since opening in 2006, the railway has transported more than 824 million tons of cargo and over 104 million passengers, significantly improving trade and access to markets.

The railway has supported the growth of local industries, reduced transportation costs, expanded tourism, and created new employment opportunities, helping improve livelihoods in the Xizang autonomous region. Freight volume has increased from 361,000 tons in 2006 to 8.31 million tons in 2025.

China has also prioritized environmental protection along the route by building wildlife passages, restoring vegetation, monitoring permafrost, and relocating infrastructure to protect Tibetan antelope migration. Today, the Qinghai-Xizang Railway stands as both a major transportation corridor and a symbol of sustainable development, technological innovation, and long-term regional prosperity.
