The Idoma International Carnival will bring four days of cultural celebrations to Otukpo, Benue State, from December 23 to 26, 2026, showcasing the traditions and identity of one of Nigeria’s major ethnic communities.

Held under the theme “Echoes of Our Ancestors,” the carnival is expected to draw visitors, cultural groups and members of the Idoma diaspora for a celebration of music, dance, traditional sports and local cuisine.

The distinctive red and black colours of Idoma traditional attire will feature prominently in the festivities, which organisers say will include street parades, masquerade performances, an Idoma food fair, traditional wrestling, musical concerts and a beauty pageant.

The programme is also expected to feature a procession through Otukpo, activities in Apa and a grand finale at the Och’Idoma Palace Square.

Beyond its performances and festivities, the carnival aims to preserve Idoma cultural traditions while supporting tourism, local businesses and opportunities for young artists and entrepreneurs.

This year’s celebration follows a significant development in the community’s efforts to preserve its cultural identity.

On December 23, 2025, the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, declared that the date would be observed annually as Idoma Cultural Day, calling for greater unity and collective responsibility in safeguarding the people’s heritage.

“Culture thrives where there is cooperation, not competition of ego. Heritage grows where there is collective ownership, not fragmentation,” the monarch said.

The royal declaration was followed in January 2026 by the inauguration of an Elders Advisory Board and a Board of Trustees for the Idoma Division Centenary Plus Celebration, commemorating more than a century since the establishment of the Idoma Division in 1923.

The centenary initiative includes cultural exhibitions, heritage documentation and community programmes intended to connect younger generations with the region’s history.

The Idoma International Carnival was founded in 2013 by Edwin Ochai as the Agila Social and Economic Carnival, initially conceived as a platform to showcase the cultural and economic potential of the Idoma people.

It has since expanded into an annual gathering that brings together traditional performances, contemporary music, fashion, art and cultural competitions.

Speaking at a previous edition, Ochai said the carnival was inspired by a desire not only to preserve Idoma traditions but also to promote economic opportunities and wider recognition of the community’s heritage.

As the 2026 celebrations approach, the carnival will once again bring the streets of Otukpo to life with the colours, sounds and traditions of Idoma culture, linking ancestral heritage with contemporary expressions of community identity.
