Troops Step Up Operations Nationwide, Rescue Kidnap Victim in Katsina as Oyo Schoolchildren Remain in Captivity

Nigerian troops have, over the past week, intensified security operations nationwide, rescued a kidnap victim in Katsina State, while sustaining efforts to free abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

In Katsina State, troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA rescued Nura Yar’Adua during forest clearance operations. The victim was found in chains and has since been evacuated for medical treatment. Security forces also recovered weapons, communication equipment and livestock linked to criminal groups.

The rescue effort was part of operations aimed at dismantling bandit enclaves and disrupting logistics networks, the military said.

In Kaduna State, troops arrested suspected bandits and recovered motorcycles and communication devices. Soldiers also restored calm after a community disturbance in Mararaba. However, the Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union warned that armed groups continue to threaten farming communities in Birnin Gwari Emirate, calling for increased patrols and intelligence gathering.

Meanwhile, in Oyo State, security forces continued efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted on May 15 from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Esiele, in Oriire LGA. The victims are believed to be held in a forested section of Oyo National Park. Troops have restricted movement in the area and are monitoring exit routes.
Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, said the government would not negotiate with the abductors, adding that details of the operation are being restricted to protect ongoing rescue efforts.

In the North-East, troops under Operation HADIN KAI recorded gains between June 16 and 19. They neutralised improvised explosive devices along the Biu–Buratai axis after tips from residents. Operation HADIN KAI also disrupted insurgent logistics, leading to the recovery of ammunition and supplies, just as suspected logistics suppliers transporting petroleum products to Boko Haram and ISWAP were arrested.

Military authorities noted that the actions reflect efforts to weaken insurgent capabilities and limit mobility.

Despite the gains, kidnapping and insurgent activity continue to challenge security forces. The continued captivity of the Oyo schoolchildren and concerns from Birnin Gwari show that armed groups have remained resilient in difficult terrain.
