Thousands of devotees, tourists and cultural enthusiasts are expected to gather at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Osun Sacred Grove in Osogbo on Friday as the 2026 Osun-Osogbo Festival reaches its grand finale.

The finale marks the culmination of the annual festival, a major celebration of Yoruba religious and cultural heritage in Nigeria.

This year’s festival is coordinated by the Osun-Osogbo Festival Organising Committee (OSOFEST) in collaboration with the Ataoja of Osogbo, traditional custodians of the Osun Sacred Grove and the Osun State Government.

Held under the theme “Preserving Heritage, Inspiring the Future,” the 2026 festival runs from July 27 to August 7. Organisers had earlier projected that activities throughout the festival period could attract about 500,000 participants.

At the centre of the grand finale is the traditional procession from the Ataoja’s Palace to the Osun Sacred Grove, where devotees, residents and visitors gather for prayers and rituals associated with Yeye Osun, the river deity revered in Yoruba religious tradition.

Leading the procession this year is the Arugba, 10-year-old Princess Alimot Moredeke Ajoke Osunbunmi, who carries a sacred calabash containing offerings presented on behalf of the community.

Festival organisers describe the ritual as a symbolic renewal of a centuries-old covenant between the people of Osogbo and Osun. Devotees traditionally associate the observance with communal well-being, protection and prosperity.

Beyond its religious significance, the 2026 festival also features a range of cultural and creative activities. The official festival programme includes a photography exhibition at the Ataoja’s Palace showcasing works by 23 Nigerian photographers and offering contemporary visual interpretations of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

The festival has also drawn visitors, researchers and content creators from Nigeria and the diaspora, with photographs and videos of traditional ceremonies, attire and performances circulating widely across social media platforms.

Another major feature of the finale is the gathering at the Osun River, where devotees traditionally collect water regarded as spiritually significant in Yoruba religious practice. Some participants carry the water away in bottles, clay pots and other containers, reflecting beliefs that associate the river with healing, fertility and blessings.

The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2005. Located on the outskirts of Osogbo, the grove is one of the last surviving sacred forests associated with Yoruba traditional culture and remains an active site of religious worship.

Its shrines, sculptures and artworks reflect Yoruba cosmology and the longstanding relationship between spiritual belief, cultural tradition and the natural environment.

The annual Osun-Osogbo Festival continues to serve as an important occasion for the transmission of Yoruba cultural and religious traditions while drawing wider attention to Nigeria’s indigenous heritage.
